In July 2016, Governor Gina Raimondo signed Rhode Island General Laws chapter 16-93 into law. This legislation, sponsored by Senator Goldin and Representative Kazarian, requires Rhode Island secondary schools to include a unit of instruction on Holocaust and Genocide in their curriculum starting in the 2017-18 academic year.
In August 2021, Senator Goldin and Representative Kislak sponsored legislation to create a permanent commission on Genocide and Holocaust education. Signed into law by Governor Dan McKee, Rhode Island General Laws chapter 16-93.1 formalizes our commission and tasks us with implementing the Holocaust and Genocide education requirement by providing curriculum support and professional development for Rhode Island educators. Since our founding, we have also branched out to providing education opportunities for the general public through partnerships with Rhode Island public libraries.
